“Naturally, you can’t have a festival without up-and-coming talent.

I know Hanina Ajarai because she told some of the most beautiful stories ever told on stage at Echt Gebeurd (True Stories, a monthly storytelling afternoon and weekly podcast). She’s done a lot already, but as a theatre-maker she’s still pretty new.

My interest was aroused when she asked me to come to the try-out in Rotterdam for a production she was making with Fahima Ettaher.

During Ey Meisje! Hanina tells a wonderful story that keeps being interrupted by sketches in which Fahima Ettaher – who in her day job is a doctor – undergoes transformations as easily as Tineke Schouten.

When I was there, they had a guest performer. The production has now had its première and they want to perform it for an all-female audience.

Shame for us men, but after watching this documentary, I understood what the motivation behind this could be.

So I won’t be at the show, but if you do go, you’re sure to come out in a better mood.”
