An Ode to the Hysterical Femme.

my sweet nasty lunacy is a solo by Hélène Vrijdag: a live EP where her alter ego Woman Folly takes the mic. The concert is a collection of hyperpop bangers as an ode to the hysterical femme. In her arena with nothing but moving lights, concert conventions and the voices in her head, Woman Folly sings her soft setlist from sweet sweet hell.

Woman Folly is a queer and feminist answer to the character of Woman Folly (or Vrouwe Zotte) in Erasmus’ book In Praise of Folly. Erasmus praises the female personification of madness while fueling his love for her with misogyny. Woman Folly became Hélène’s imaginary friend, a penpal she wrote daily letters to between 2019 and 2021. Those letters stayed unanswered, but they were bundled in a book called Vrouwe Zotte which is for sale after the show.

my sweet nasty lunacy voices a diva too angry to give a show. Woman Folly embodies ‘Woman’ as a phantasmic creature outside of gender binaries, and ‘Folly’ as a protest against normativity.

About the maker

Hélène Vrijdag (1996, Rennes, FR) (she/her) is a Rotterdam-based performer, singer, writer, and weaver. After studying Performance at the Theater Academy in Maastricht, she is currently pursuing a master's degree in Gender Studies. She combines her artistic practice with queer and feminist academic research focused on musicology, pop culture and mythology.

Vocality is at the centre of Hélène’s solo work. She uses voice and vocal textures as a political and performative weapon to take in sonic space as a feminist. Hélène explores how her lead vocal — a high pitched clear timbre —can disrupt the fantasy of patriarchal heteronormativity.

Hélène makes her autonomous music performances as part of STUDIO SIBLING, a duo consisting of her and Timo Tembuyser (1991, Aalst, BE). Besides that, she is co-founder of eco-feminist weaving and performance collective WEEF.collective together with Lieve Fikkers (1998, Rotterdam, NL).
