Yinka Kuitenbrouwer

Biography

Actress and theatre-maker Yinka Kuitenbrouwer (Amsterdam 1990) collects stories: the experiences, memories, cares and desires of people like you and I. She shuffles these stories together to form intimate narrative productions on life today; productions that have the power to move through their simplicity and recognisability, and which at the same time transcend the personal. Characteristic of Kuitenbrouwers’ work – whether a classical piece or a small-scale living-room performance – is her open and direct way of performing, one human being to another.

After graduating from the drama course at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent (2014), Kuitenbrouwer quickly broke through with the renowned production Honderdhuizen (2015), a collage around the concept of ‘home’ on the basis of discussions with a hundred very different people. The production has been selected for Circuit X, and won the Fringe First and Total Theatre Awards in Edinburgh, as well as the distinction Big in Belgium. She then made Kan dus niet (2017), a documentary production based on discussions with young adults in psychiatric care.

In 2017, Kuitenbrouwer was invited by Frascati to go out into the city as an investigative journalist. Specially for the opening debate in Frascati Issues De (on)vertelde stad, she created a portrait of Amsterdam based around a journey from the beginning to the end of tram line 13. In September 2018, for Frascati Producties she presented the first in a series of documentary research productions on generations, our responsibility for the future and the price of progress. Morgen werd alles beter is an audio installation course based on conversations with people from four generations:

How do you see the future?
Is our world getting better or worse?
Was everything better in the past?
What do you think the world will look like twenty years from now?
What would you like the world to look like twenty years from now?
And what are you going to do about it?

Yinka Kuitenbrouwer graduated in drama from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent (2014). She has performed in several productions, including De Vrijetijdsmens – studie #2 by l’hommmm, Chaos by audio theatre company Tuning People and De Grieken by Ghent-based collectief KIP. Together with Kirsten Mariën she created three location-specific productions for children: Feest (hoera!) (for BOMfestival), overeneuit  (with Vrijstaat O en Raversyde) and Komkomkomkom (for Wildemannenwoestewijven). Her production Honderdhuizen was selected for Circuit X, won the Fringe First and Total Theatre Awards in Edinburgh and resulted in a Big in Belgium distinction. Morgen werd alles beter is her first production with Frascati Producties.
