“You can write me into history
with your bitter and twisted lies
you can trample me in the dirt
but still, like the dust, I will rise up.“ Maya Angelou

The words violence, emancipation, pain and self-empowerment highlight the reality of being black in today's world. In BLACK, Ivorian choreographer Oulouy embodies the struggle for recognition, equality and respect of black people, referring to episodes in recent history, such as the #blacklivesmatter movement.

Oulouy draws on a choreographic repertoire of the major urban styles of the African continent and the United States - Coupé-Décalé, Azonto, Ndomboló, Afrohouse and Krump - to depict the history of the freedom movement. Always in a state of unrest and discomfort and with the potential to gradually influence and reshape the world.

Previously at Tel Aviv Dance 2022, Dampfzentrlle Bern 2023, among others.

Duration: 30 min.
