JAH! by choreographer Dalton Jansen is a powerful ode to the black man in a Western world and a profound celebration of fatherhood. Six performers move through collective traumas in search of inner freedom. Which traumas do you transfer and which do you let go? And how are they passed on from generation to generation?

Inspired by personal experiences, historical events and the profound sounds and words of Rastafarian messengers such as Alpha Blondy, Bob Marley and Sizzla, Jansen hopes with JAH! to dismantle stereotypes: of the Rastas, dreadlocks, the black man and the black father.

JAH! celebrates the power of music, language and dance and exposes intergenerational trauma. It questions the concepts of love, unity and peace in today's times, while delving deeply into the father-son relationship. In a time of polarization and individualism, JAH! celebrates the liberating effect of connection and resistance.

Over Dalton Jansen

Danser en choreograaf Dalton Jansen (1993, Rotterdam) wil drempels weghalen, uit hokjes breken en ontmoetingen faciliteren. Sociale bewogenheid en artistieke drijfveren vallen in zijn voorstellingen naadloos samen. Zijn werk is maatschappelijk betrokken en roept op tot verbinding in de meest brede zin van het woord. Met zijn eigen gezelschap BlackBirds wil hij samenwerken met nieuw talent en geeft hij jongeren die in moeilijke sociaal-maatschappelijk posities zijn terechtgekomen de ruimte om zich artistiek te ontwikkelen.

Dalton Jansen is een ambitieuze, jonge choreograaf en een ondernemende maker. In 2014 won hij de publieksprijs bij Het Rotterdams Open Podium. Het jaar erna richtte hij samen met Gihan Koster enTerencio Douw het danscollectief The Double Collective op, dat diverse prijzen in battles en danswedstrijden won. In 2018 studeerde hij af aan de opleiding Urban Contemporary (JMD) aan de Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten. Onder de naam Dalton Jansen Choreography bracht hij vervolgens meerdere dansvoorstellingen.
