When he lost his job, the Milanese Giovanni Cafaro began waiting in line for others in exchange for money. The actress Marleen Scholten used his story as a basis for her monologue La codista. It turned into a story about waiting in line (‘la coda’), about putting yourself in someone else’s shoes and about the impatience and desire that is a part of waiting.

Scholten lives in Italy and for this project interviewed various Italians about how they experience standing still and what it means. In addition, the actress stood in line for hours, for example at the post office or the tax office, in order to experience for herself the mechanism of waiting. She found chaos and sim

plicity there, people coming together someplace with only one purpose: waiting their turn. La codista is a personal piece about identity and the desire to slow down sometimes. Scholten was awarded Italy’s Antonio Conti national playwright’s prize for the piece. ‘La codista’ waits her turn together with the audience.

For the piece La Codista Marleen Scholte has been awarded the Antonio Conti in Italy.

Non voglio essere la prima. Preferisco essere l’ultima. Più il mondo va veloce, più io rallento. Vado contro corrente. Come un salmone. Per una codista il mondo è sottosopra. 

Basato sulla storia vera di Giovanni Cafaro, un milanese che aveva perso il lavoro e si è messo in coda per gli altri, Marleen Scholten ha scritto un testo sull’attesa. Attendere in coda, per gli altri in questo caso. Nella coda scopre il caos e la semplicità: gente che si trova in un posto con un unico obiettivo: aspettare il proprio turno.                                                          

La codista è un testo personale sull’identità e il desiderio di rallentare ogni tanto. Forse non si trova la risposta subito. Insieme al pubblico la codista aspetta il suo turno.

Per questo progetto Marleen ha fatto delle interviste con diversi cittadini italiani su cosa significa fermarsi. Poi si è messa personalmente in tante lunghe code per sottoporsi al meccanismo dell’attesa.

Per il testo ha vinto in Italia il premio nazionale drammaturgico Antonio Conti.
