Welcome to Het Verbond

In the heart of Amsterdam, Het Verbond is a place for artistic practice: a shared workspace and incubator. A home base for artists who want to deepen, expand, and reflect their practice in relation to the world around them. It is a collective infrastructure: Frascati provides the space and facilities, while the makers bring the content and energy. It is a place for reflection, exchange, and inspiration alongside the daily practice of writing, creating, and researching.

In a field where the emphasis often lies on production and visibility, Het Verbond offers space to pause, explore questions, and engage in conversation. In this way, Het Verbond becomes more than a shared workspace. It is a free and open space where artists can deepen their practice, inspire one another, and build a community in which reflection, exchange, and connection are central.

Many makers find themselves, after graduating, in a professional field that is heavily focused on production. The pressure to present is high, while there is little room for research and sustainable development. Yet these are precisely the elements essential for an artistic practice to grow. That’s why, in the heart of Amsterdam, we have opened up spaces to share this infrastructure with a broader group of makers.

Het Verbond responds to this need by providing space for makers in the early stages of their professional careers. Makers who may not yet have an established practice, but who feel the urgency and ambition to develop their artistic signature. Here, they can meet, inspire, and challenge one another – without the immediate pressure of production.

The Spaces

Het Verbond is located in Frascati 4, Nes 71 in Amsterdam, and consists of three spaces: the Atelier, the Salon and the Verbond Café. The Atelier is a flexible workspace suitable for research, small presentations, workshops or intimate rehearsals. It is not a full rehearsal studio, but it does offer the opportunity to experiment or explore a scene. The Atelier can be booked up to three months in advance, for a maximum of three consecutive days. The Salon is the former foyer of the Engelenbak. It is suitable for conversations, small gatherings or presentations, and can also be reserved up to three months in advance. The Verbond Café forms the heart of the community. It is a shared working and meeting space, newly designed as a crossroads where ideas emerge, plans are exchanged and networks grow.

Het Verbond focuses on makers in the early stages of their careers. They are no longer in training, but they also do not yet have a fully established practice. Many have several years of experience and have created a number of productions, and are now looking to deepen their artistic signature. They are autonomous, curious and critical, and they choose a shared working context consciously. This requires more than simply sharing workspaces: it also calls for taking responsibility, engaging in dialogue and inspiring one another.

Each artist’s own practice is central, but we ask members to occasionally share their research or process. That is why every member organises at least one – and no more than three – activities per year for fellow members or for a public audience. This may take the form of a workshop, film night, talk, presentation, debate or another mode of knowledge exchange. These activities have an informal and exploratory character and are not full productions.
